It's March - the season of acceptances and non acceptances at schools around the country. Many students of many different ages await decisions about their future education, whether it is high school, college, or even elementary or middle school. As a parent, I did not experience this cycle until my children went to college, and at any age, it can be challenging. Currently, I am on the other side of the admissions table. As someone who does some amount of admissions work at an independent school, it has been intriguing to take a different perspective. A few factors to keep in mind: In some geographical locations, there are hundreds of applications for a few spots. There are numerous children who would be great fits at many schools, and the logistical reality is that children are not accepted due to lack of space. Many schools aren't searching for the child who participates in every activity or excels in every aspect of their academics. The fit between student, parent, and a school is vital, and sets up everyone for success. Independent elementary and middle schools want to ensure they will have a strong philosophical match, partnership, and most importantly, the ability to fully meet your child's needs. No matter what age your child applies to a school, a "no" answer is not personal! Take the "no's" as opportunities to help children (and parents) deal with emotions such as disappointment. Take these opportunities to have a growth mindset about what else is waiting around the corner on an educational journey. As my mother always says "things work out for the best", and in my experiences, I have found that to be very true!
